Counselling

In a glasshouse, there is growth. As we reflect, navigate and process your experience you will notice positive change so you may thrive.

Counselling will help you to reclaim control during tumultuous and difficult times by providing an opportunity to process feelings and develop strategies to flourish.

Together we will establish what you want to achieve within the sessions and design an approach that works for you. We'll aim for substantial and sustainable change that will empower you with the skills and strategies to take control.

My practice is trauma-informed and I draw on the skills and techniques found in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Narrative therapy, and mindfulness and relaxation techniques. My approach is informed by current evidenced-based practice which helps guide our approach to achieve optimal outcomes.

Do you have a disability?

The  psychological impact of disability is often overlooked. I have worked with people who have lived with a disability all their lives and those who have more recently acquired one.

For those who acquire a disability, it is sometimes difficult to adjust to changes in the way our body or brain functions. This can impact the way we feel about ourselves and our new circumstances.

For those who have lived with disability for some time, each new phase of life brings new challenges that may be impacting on your quality of life.

Exploring how you feel and developing strategies can make a significant difference to your life.

Do you have a new medical diagnosis?

Receiving a new medical diagnosis can be one of the most overwhelming life moments.  After the initial shock it is quite normal to feel numb, depressed, confused, angry and distressed.

It is a time when lots of new medical information is being presented, bringing up both familiar and unfamiliar feelings. This can make it difficult to absorb and unpack information, manage daily tasks, get quality sleep and mobilise.

Exploring how you feel and developing strategies to gain control

can have a positive impact on your ability to cope.

Are you a carer?

You may have become a carer gradually over time or the role could have been a sudden and unexpected change. Either way you may be feeling overwhelmed, confused, depressed, distressed, frustrated, anxious or alone.

You might be experiencing family strain, disruptions in sleep and burn out. You may also feel a tremendous sense of loss – the loss of a partner, child or parent and own identity.

We sometimes feel like all the care and energy we have should go to our loved one, but it is equally important to process our feelings for our own wellbeing and capacity to support.

It can be helpful to process these feelings with a professional counsellor.

Have you immigrated ?

Big moves either interstate or abroad bring with it a unique set of emotions and feelings because whilst the move brings feelings of excitement, adventure and opportunity we can also simultaneously feel lovely, isolated, anxious, sad and guilty. Being out of our comfort zone might be bringing up some unrecognisable feelings and behaviours such as anger, frustration, poor sleep patterns, deep feelings of sadness and anxiety.

Leaving  family or friends behind can also weigh heavily on us. You may be missing your people and feeling a deep sense of guilt about continuing with life in a new place without them. Further, if you have left behind aging parents and family you might be feeling a heavy burden of guilt, sadness and fear about what the future might bring.

I have a lived experience of immigration, in fact I have done it twice and I found it difficult for different reasons when I was  24 and then again when I was 49.

I found it helpful to process these feelings with a professional counsellor.
